Pac-Man Already Sparring For Marquez Fight; Jorge Linares Says Manny Will Stop Marquez “In Four Or Five-Rounds!”

By James Slater: With a little over seven weeks to go until he climbs into the ring for his third eagerly awaited battle with Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez, Pound-for-Pound king Manny Pacquiao has already started sparring.

 

According to an interesting news article that has appeared on Inquirer Sports, Pac-Man surprised even head-trainer Freddie Roach when, just three days into his training camp for the November 12th bout, his star fighter asked if he could spar a few rounds with Venezuela’s Jorge Linares. Linares, who will face Antonio DeMarco for the vacant WBC lightweight title on the big Las Vegas card, sparred four hard rounds with the 32-year-old mega star.

 

Linares was so impressed with the way Pacquiao looked in the sessions that he gave a bold prediction shortly afterwards: that Pacquiao will halt “Dinamita” in the third fight - inside “four or five-rounds.”

 

While assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez also had nothing but great things to say about Pac-Man’sabilities in camp at this early stage.

 

“He’s on fire,” Fernandez said. “Never in our previous camps has he improved so fast. And the results are good, so we’re giving in to what he wants.”

 

Hence the early sparring Pac-Man asked for being granted. Often, trainers will desist from having their fighters spar too many rounds, as well as preventing them from beginning sparring too early on in a camp, so as not to risk the fighter “leaving it in the gym.” But Roach and the rest of Team-Pacquiao clearly feel Manny is in no risk from early and hard sparring.

 

Roach has gone on record as saying that only a KO win will do on November 12th. Roach wants no further close points wins over the 38-year-old Mexican who pushed Pac-Man all the way in two previous encounters. Roach wants his star to close the show on this series with an emphatic, no chance for debate, knockout. And Manny is already feeling the urge to throw leather at a live body.

 

Pacquiao and Linares will almost certainly spar more rounds in the coming weeks, perhaps when Pac-Man arrives in L.A for the second half of his training camp. Both fighters will obviously be in fantastic shape for their respective bouts on the potentially great Nov. 12th card. Pac-Man is sure to also spar with 140-pound champ Amir Khan. Either way you look at it, that’s great preparation.

 

I wonder who Marquez will choose as his spar-mates for the third, crucial encounter with the Filipino dynamo?

Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Roach joins Manny in the Philippines for training camp

By Chris Williams:Trainer Freddie Roach has joined his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in training camp in Baguio City in the Philippines to get Manny ready for his third fight with 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

 

This will be the first part of Pacquiao’s training camp with the second part ending up in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California.

Pacquiao struggled to what many boxing fans saw as a gift 12 round draw in 2004 and then was given a 12 round split decision win in their rematch in 2008, in another fight that many boxing fans thought that Marquez should have won. However, the judges that worked those two fights saw it differently and came up with decisions that they felt were the right ones at the time. I saw both fights and had Marquez winning them both, but that’s how it goes sometime.

 

“This fight will put an end to all the questions,” Pacquiao said to the Manila Bulletin. Maybe so or maybe not. We’ll have to wait and see. We’re talking about a really popular boxer in Pacquiao facing a guy that is nowhere near as popular in 38-year-old Marquez.

 

Anytime you get an imbalance like that, along with a large crowd that will likely overwhelmingly be favoring Pacquiao, it puts the less popular fighter [Marquez] in a one down position where he has to do something extra special to get a win. I think we could have another controversial win for Pacquiao with Marquez dominating most of the action but ending up losing on the judges’ scorecards.

 

There are two things that I think may keep that from happening this time, however. 1. Marquez is really old now, almost 40. It was wise for Bob Arum and Pacquiao to wait this long until fighting Marquez again, because he’s probably old to win now even if he does dominate. 2. not giving Marquez much of a catchweight will almost surely make it nearly impossible for him to win. The fight will be held at 144 lbs, which is nearly 10 pounds heavier than what Marquez has been fighting at. He’s proven that he looks terrible when he fights over 140.

 

So there it is, another advantage for Pacquiao. He’ll be the more popular guy, the younger fighter, have the crowd on his side, will be the bigger guy, and the judges will likely defer to Pacquiao if the fight is even slightly close. I think Marquez doesn’t have much of a chance in this fight with all those thing stacked against him.

Marquez criticizes Mayweather, Ortiz

 

MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is critical of both new WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the man he defeated, Victor Ortiz.

"I think what Victor Ortiz did is unacceptable. A head butt is something for the street and not worthy for a professional boxer in the ring," Marquez told BoxingScene.com.

"And Mayweather, he would retaliate with more street fighting," he added.

In the pivotal 4th round of the Mayweather-Ortiz bout, Ortiz drove Mayweather to a corner and headbutted him.

The referee Joe Cortez deducted a point from Ortiz, who profusely apologized to Mayweather.

But after Ortiz apologized for the 3rd time, Mayweather rocked him with a 1-2 combination that dropped him to the canvas, ending the bout.

Marquez feels both boxers' actions were inappropriate and unsportsmanlike.

He said there will be no shenanigans when he fights Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao on November 12.

"Despite the referee's advising you in the dressing room, telling you that you should always protect yourself, there is something called professionalism. There is sportsmanship and professionalism," he said.

"The November 12 fight against Pacquiao will be fair and you can look for a clear winner in the ring," Marquez added.

Marquez also questioned the actions of referee Cortez.

"The referee says you should never let your guard down, but the referee never restarted the fight. It is controversial what they did," Marquez said.

He believes the bout should ultimately have been marked as invalid.

"The referee must stop the bout to speak to a commissioner in the ring and then restart the fight. They give Mayweather a knockout and there is serious error with everyone, including the Commission of Nevada," Marquez said.

He added, "A fight that was starting to turn good was spoiled for everyone."

Mayweather vs Ortiz fight: Pacquiao not on radar

Mayweather vs Ortiz fight was a great entertainer. Meanwhile he said that Manny Pacquiao is no longer on his radar

Floyd Mayweather Jr is over the moon right now. He has beaten a formidable foe in Victor Ortiz and made a fortune out of a fight that not many said would be memorable. To be true, only Mayweather camp made it look like a grand fight.

A fight can never be grand till there are two fighters of the same stature. And I wonder if any boxing fan can call Victor Ortiz even remotely comparable to Mayweather. They will say that he was out of ring for the last 16 months and Ortiz had been in the thick of action all this while.

But Mayweather is one of the most gifted boxers of our time. Even those boxing fans who dislike him badly will accept that. Despite hating him, they want to watch all his outings in the rings as it is the real entertainment.

Ortiz too can go out of the ring consoling himself of the fact that the decision was controversial and when he was pronounced beaten and defeated, he was actually throwing some good punches at Mayweather.

To be true, Mayweather is a good plotter of a psychological warfare. He had beaten Ortiz long before he entered the ring. He took potshots at him during their outings before the fight and brought his mother, his father, brother and trainer into the picture by talking about them and making Ortiz look like irresponsible and uncaring.

But not many are sure that this fight will give a boost to his rating as a boxer in the days to come. His punches in the fourth round may be legit, but not expected from a top boxer.

Meanwhile if you are thinking that this fight – almost a one sided affair- will prompt Mayweather to challenge Manny Pacquiao and be a true pound for pound king, you are mistaken. He has dashed all such hopes by bragging about his past and accusing Manny of everything that he is not.

The way he talked about Manny Pacquiao, it was clear that he was not willing to bet his prestige by facing him. Though what he said was juxtopposed. He didn’t challenge mManny but said, “I’m telling you, he doesn’t want to fight”.

He further thundered, “We’ve been talking about this for the longest…This boy don’t really want to fight. All this boy is doing is fighting my leftovers

He went on to parrot the same old line, he has been repeating for years, “I don’t need him. Where was Pacquiao in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 when I was dominating the game? He never asked me (for a fight) when I was in my twenties or when I was in my teens.”

““Floyd Mayweather, from the beginning of his career in the ’90s, we knew he was going to be a great professional. Now ask yourself, a fighter just don’t get to 25 years old and all of a sudden he becomes great”, he heaped praise on himself. A truly great fighter is praised and doesn’t need himself to make a point about his own abilities.

It is about time that he decides to face Manny and let the hands do the talking instead of the big mouth.

Strength and conditioning guru Alex Ariza spoke with Crystina Poncher about what has changed for Manny Pacquiao since he last met Juan Manuel Marquez back in 2008:

Ariza: "I think we've seen him be able to go up through the weight divisions with the same amount of speed that he had in the lower weight divisions. But he's a different fighter now. He's more athletic, he's able to execute the game plans the way Freddie wants him to. I wasn't with him in those earlier fights. So I think we've fixed the problems that he felt that he had, as far as his strength and his conditioning, and I think he's shown that as he's moved up through the divisions. ... I think that was the Manny of old and there's a new Manny now. He's a differently-trained Manny, his whole strength and conditioning program has changed. I think Marquez is obviously going to make it a fight, not like Mosley. If you hit Marquez, he's there to fight, and he'll come back even if you hit him, or if you knock him down. I suspect that we're gonna come in just tip-top and ready to fight."

Ariza says he was asked by Paqcuiao to come out on Monday to start working in the Philippines, as he was originally scheduled to go out on Saturday.

What Boxing Needs to Become Big Again – More Than Just Pacquiao vs Mayweather

Big fights. We know that. Pacquiao vs Mayweather, if and when it happens, might be the biggest purse ever in a boxing match. Big fights and big names bring boxing to the mainstream crowd. True, the mainstream crowd won’t get it on Network channels, it’ll have to be HBO, but the money’s there. The PPV isn’t the problem.

But big fights like this potential welterweight clash between the most popular boxer in the world, despite, or maybe because he’s not American and the undefeated Mayweather are short term fixes (a dangerous word when it involves boxing). There aren’t that many opportunities like and names out there to keep a consistent interest in the sport.

Marquez: I won first 2 matches vs Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez again insisted he won his first 2 fights against now 8-divison champion Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez made the statement during the Manila leg of their global press tour promoting their November 12 welterweight title fight.

“I won the first 2 fights… In 2004 and 2008,” he asserted.

This was his reply when asked if his career would be complete even without a win against Pacquiao.

He, however, admitted being grateful to be given the chance to square off with  the fighting congressman again.

“I feel very happy for the opportunity… I expect the best Manny Pacquiao for this fight,” said Marquez.

The two boxers will be fighting it out for the 3rd time at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2004, Pacquiao scored 3 first round knockdowns against Marquez. The Mexican, however, was able to salvage a draw.
